Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris is a vigorous, deciduous vine that can reach 60 or 80 feet. It is the "common" climbing hydrangea vine that you could find at a good garden center or even a big box store. The flowers are flattened lacecap-like 6 to 10 inches across, blooming white in late spring or early summer. It attaches by aerial roots and is happy in a brightly shaded spot. It will climb trees, walls, solid fences and if removed leaves a tracery behind so I would not suggest growing it on a wooden sided building that may need later repair or repainting. Zones 4 - 8. Happier and more robust in the cooler zones. A beauty for the patient gardener. Two photos courtesy Dr. Michael Dirr.
