Alice Oakleaf Hydrangea - 3 quart
Alice Oakleaf Hydrangea - 3 quart

$18.95
Hydrangea quercifolia ’Alice’ is the most robust oakleaf we grow. A selection by Dr. Michael Dirr from a plant on the University of Georgia campus it has proven to be trouble free. Give it room as the original plant is 12 feet high and as wide. BIG! And ROBUST! It produces very large, slightly fragrant, creamy-white blooms in early summer that age to a fine rose color as the summer proceeds. Prefers a bit of shade around here but will do as well in full sun if need be. Easy to grow, native and splendid - just don’t crowd it. Deciduous. Zones 5 - 9.

Amethyst Falls Native Wisteria - 1/2 gallon
Amethyst Falls Native Wisteria - 1/2 gallon

$19.95
This is NOT the invasive exotic wisteria species that has escaped to smother much of the roadside throughout the south, competing with Lonicera japonica. Rather Wisteria frutescens ’Amethyst Falls’ is an American native species, a selection found in the northwest corner of SC and introduced by Head-Lee Nursery. It flowers as a very young plant with slightly fragrant blooms well after any chance of frost. Give it lots of sun. It usually reblooms in late spring. Vigorous but not invasive, deciduous, for sun in zones 5-9.

The search for a pink oakleaf can be as troublesome as the search for a blue rose, but recently with Hydangea q. ’Amethyst’ the cause has been advanced. This oakleaf selection starts white but colors very quickly to a nice pink on a fairly short plant to about 6 feet high & 6 feet wide. Deciduous, best flower color in lots of sun but it sure appreciates some shade in the hot afternoon. Zones 5-9.

Zones 4-8.

Hydrangea arborescens ’Bounty’ offers a variation on the theme of ’Annabelle’. Again the white flowers are mostly sterile & showy but the sepals comprising the mophead are smaller than those of ’Annabelle’. The flower heads display on stout stems and are less likely to flop or sprawl after rain, which we need. Tough & reliable bloomer on the new growth of the season. Shared with us by Keith Howe, Country Gardens, Fall City, WA. Zones 4 - 8. Height to 3 feet or so.

"Among the most handsome of the climbing honeysuckles." (Dr. Michael Dirr in his classic, Manual of Woody Landscape Plants, 6th ed.) What more can I say? Lonicera x heckrottii is truly a great honeysuckle vine. Slightly fragrant, yellow flowers that are flushed purple are held at the ends of shoots in late spring to late summer. Easy to grow, thrives in full sun but will do in light shade. Blooms on new growth of the season. Deciduous. Zones 5-9.

Hydrangea arborescens ’Grandiflora’ is a native hydrangea similar to ’Annabelle’ with a lumpily rounded white bloom that is not so uniform as ’Annabelle.’ It is our opinion that it also has stouter stems & is not as likely to sprawl under the weight of its flowers. In all other respects it is similar: blooms on new wood, very cold hardy, a favorite of deer. Grow in partial shade in the south, more sun up north. Height to 4 feet. Zones 4-8.

This is a true "gardenii" species unlike the more commonly sold selection ’Mt. Airy’. ’Jane Platt’ will grow in either sun or shade but will have better fall color in more sun. The flowers are creamy-white, honey-scented, in spring before the foliage appears. Deciduous. Zones 5 - 8.
