Jane Platt Star Magnolia - 2 quart
Jane Platt Star Magnolia - 2 quart Magnolia stellata ’Jane Platt’ comes from the Oregon garden of noted plantswoman, Jane Platt. In her garden it was tagged as Magnolia stellata ’Rosea’, but Gossler Farms Nursery (also in Oregon) introduced it under her name since it appeared distinct from the ’Rosea’ selection then available in this country. We got our plant from the Atlanta Botanical Gardens over 30 years ago and put it in our garden in Inman Park in Atlanta. Time passes. We sold that home.
But we return each April to stay with friends during the Inman Park Festival and in 2018 Elizabeth took cuttings from the tree in our old back yard. The texts suggest such springtime soft cuttings don’t root well, but we had a few to take. And a few of those few are for sale. The others we’ll plant here at the nursery adding to our arboretum. Blooms early spring and can often be frozen to brown mush if the flower buds have opened followed by a late, hard freeze. Flowers that aren’t caught by winter are light pink in the tepals then opening to white. Height to 20 feet where happy. Zones 4 - 8.
