A heavily pigmented mophead, Hydrangea macrophylla ’Mathilda Gutges’ will be a dark blue (with violet tones) on acid soil but changes readily to a red or pink if you garden in sweeter soil. It is short, near dwarf, at about 3 feet with good, clean, dark green foliage. Often seen as a cut flower or forced for floral display at events. An "oldie but a goodie". Zones 6 - 9. Deciduous.
