The start of the summer gardening season is marked by increasing temperatures and new flowers! As other garden plants begin blooming in the garden, you may be wondering: when will I see my hydrangeas bloom? Timing for this classic summer-blooming shrub depends on the type of hydrangea, as well as a few other conditions, such winter temperatures and maintenance. Discover when different types of hydrangeas bloom and the factors that influence bloom time.
What Influences Hydrangea Bloom Time?
There are a few different factors that may influence hydrangea bloom time:
- Hydrangea type: Different types of hydrangeas begin blooming at different times. Hydrangeas that bloom on old wood tend to bloom a bit sooner because flower buds are setting on growth from the previous season, while new wood hydrangeas take a little more time to push up new growth.
- Pruning: Cutting hydrangeas at the wrong time could delay flowering. For example, if you cut back new-wood hydrangeas in late spring instead of early spring, blooms may not appear until late summer.
- Temperature/Winter Conditions: An exceptionally frigid winter/spring could influence hydrangea bloom time. This is because cold temperatures can kill the previous season's growth, where old wood hydrangeas set their flower buds.
