Oakleaf hydrangea (H. quercifolia) is, in our opinion, a true four-season plant, with fuzzy white buds in spring unfurling to dramatic oak-shaped leaves, big, cone-shaped, fragrant blooms in summer, some of the best fall color in the plant kingdom (never mind the hydrangea family!), and a dramatic, sculptural habit in winter that's accentuated by peeling bark. Native to North America, oakleaf hydrangeas make an excellent choice for gardeners who want to attract birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.
