Description

Soil:

Hostas prefer to be grown in average or fertile soil as long as it stays moist and is well-draining.

Light:

Hosta plants thrive in shade (< 4 hours sun) to part sun (4-6 hours sun). Morning sun and afternoon shade are ideal for hosta plants, especially in hotter climates.

Water:

Hostas have average water needs, and once established, they have some tolerance for dry shade (particularly plants with thick leaves). The soil should not dry out for the best growth.

Fertilizing:

In spring, a light fertilizer can be applied around the emerging hosta. However, it may not be necessary if your garden has fertile soil.

Winterizing:

Slugs lay their eggs in dead hosta foliage, and removing leaves after frost will deter slugs from returning in spring. Cut the foliage back in late fall, but leave 4-6 inches standing to protect the crown over winter. In cold climates, spread an extra layer of mulch (2″ thick) for added insulation.

Maintenance & Pruning:

Hostas don’t require much maintenance, but you can groom plants by removing yellow or dead leaves and cutting flower spikes back as they finish blooming in summer.

Doing good so far

The June hostas are doing great so far. Some of the Patriot hostas are struggling. But they may have been ovetwatered by the sprinklers hitting the new sod. We got approx 200 plants from you this August/Sept. Only one has died. A lavender. I have been very impressed with the quality of the plants so far. And how they were packaged for shipping. One large box of plants was held up by FedEx for about 4 days and even those plants arrived in good order.

These beautiful June hostas were the pick up my daughter. They are doing very well so far, especially due to where we live in zone eight with very little shade. We make sure they are watered plentiful early each morning or upon cooling off in the evening. They are doing great And once again, thank you for a great product

Beautiful hostas!

I was a little skeptical about ordering plants through the mail. My hostas arrived quickly, were easy to unpack-age, and looked amazing! I love the detailed instructions, including planting and watering tips. I will order from Great Garden Plants again and would highly recommend this company!!
