Description

Soil:

Spike speedwell is easily grown in average, medium-moisture, well-drained soil. Rich organic matter can be added to the soil to improve overall performance.

Light:

This perennial grows best in full sun (> 6 hours sun) or part sun (4-6 hours sun), with improved flower performance in full sun.

Water:

Spike speedwell has fairly average water needs. The best performance occurs with consistent, regular moisture and sharp soil drainage (particularly in winter).

Fertilizing:

Feed your spike speedwell plants with a general-purpose slow-release fertilizer before new growth begins in spring.

Winterizing:

Cut back to basal growth in late autumn.

Maintenance & Pruning:

Removing faded blooms encourages the flower spires to rebloom. Cutting back faded spikes to the new growth at their base improves their appearance.

Gorgeous Blue Color & More!

I purchased six last year and all six came back this spring and they look amazing! I’m so pleased because it’s been very dry. Every plant doubled in size from last year. Prolific bloomer!

Blue Speedwells

SUCCESS!! (zone 6a) I planted mine right away, and two weeks later both of them are already showing tiny blue flowers on their spikes. They never faltered, they took hold right away. Now they just need to get bigger and start spreading.
I was so pleased I ordered two more.

I gave 3 stars because of the packaging. When i pulled the 1st tube containing 2 plants out of the box, the plant slid out of the bottom and hit the floor, knocking dirt out and damaged some limbs, as it slid out, the counterweight of the 2nd plant made it drop too!! How about a single piece of tape across the openings to prevent this? Then trying to remove the plastic off of it only to make more of a mess due to riveting the plastics to the pots in a permanent fashion is ridiculous. Would tying a simple knot or even use a twist ties be more helpful? It was quite stressful for me and the poor damaged plants. I spent a lot of money on these and it wasn't worth the stress. I'll just go to a nursery next time and save the hassle.

On arrival the plants were incredibly small for the amount of money we paid. They looked really ragged and gangly. They are starting to look better and starting to grow so that’s good. But what we got for the money we paid I will not do that ever again.

The size of our plants varies depending on the time of year and whether they were recently trimmed. Off to a great start!

The plants arrived well packed and very healthy. Have planted them and they appear to be getting settled nicely. Won’t know the full story until they’ve been around for a couple or three years or more, fingers crossed! We live in a challenging planting area, but speedwell seem to like it here.
